Sited just northeast of downtown Houston, Kelly Village Community Park is used by the residents of Houston Housing Authority’s Kelly Village Community and their guests. The park’s design replaces an open field where damaged apartment buildings were razed after Hurricane Ike. The new park includes exercise equipment, a walking path, a large gazebo, and two additional shading structures that overlook the sport fields.
The gazebo and shading structures are comprised of vandal-resistant decking, corrugated metal, steel angles and piping, chain link fencing for vines, and bright yellow molded fiberglass grating for the roof. The structures are accented with bright colors, offsetting them from the adjacent concrete highway and brown brick apartments.
This project was completed in collaboration with Val Glitsch, FAIA.
